Spring Fever! Sports! Break! And it’s in the Snow!

Here at the fabulous oasis of Burley High, with only two more days until Spring Break, Spring Fever is here and is infecting the population of our school.  Kids are starting the count down for Summer Vacation, 3rd quarter is winding down and Seniors are starting to feel the pressure.

Now, maybe it’s because we’re so close to the end of the year, but in my personal opinion I believe it was that lovely and glorious day we had yesterday!  For the first time in months, when I opened the door of my lil Dodge Neon, IT FELT LIKE SUMMER!  We’ve all had them, you know, those crappy first cars.  But as much as we curse them in different seasons, depending on what’s broken at the time, we probably couldn’t imagine starting out with anything else… gotta love ‘em.  The warm weather inspired many spring athletes to pull on those shorts and ditch the sweats.  Whether it be tennis, track, golf, baseball, or softball, these spring athletes were ready for the nice weather… and then… it comes crashing down with a drizzle.

Now this drizzle turned into sleet, and that sleet turned into flakes, and those flakes turned into clumps of fluffy white stuff that brought the spring weather to a screeching halt.  In hopes of a snow day we students did not loose faith or our, well… ‘springy’, spirits.  So now, here we are, in school and outside our windows there is a winter (cold, slushy and a bit depressing) wonderland.

But the weather will not stop these giddy kids!  Whether it be kicking back in an arm chair under a heat lamp, jetting somewhere in search of warmer weather, or playing their sport in the cold (or in our case, a gym)  Bobcats will be sweating with the fever… Spring Fever.

So bundle up! Stay warm!  And try and keep up with these energetic spring players!  The golf tournament was cancelled due to the icky weather.  Track is supposed to have a meet on Thursday, March 11 @ 3:30 (although everything now depends on the weather).  Baseball boys have a game with Skyline at Burley @4:00 on Friday, March 12.

Wrestling Districts: Going to State Anyone?

Wrestling districts was held at Minico High School today.  The matches began around 11 o’clock this morning and went clear into the evening.  Districts hosted 6 teams from around our area, including: Burley, Minico, Canyon Ridge, Jerome and several others.  Our Burley team took 15 of our finest boys.  After putting their bodies to the test they went head to head with some of the best from the area.  Seven of these said boys qualified to go to State.  Among these was 103-pounder Brandon Chesley, 119-pounder Seth Garza, 130-pounder Christian Parke, 140-pounder Jacob Lake, 160-pounder Adrian Quiroz, 171-pounder Ryan Lott, and our 289 heavy weight Able Delgado.  Needless to say that those in our little community are very proud of all of our boys!  When push comes to shove these boys definitely bring it and show others what the Cats are made of.

Burley Girls Fight For Victory: Burley vs. Century

Just finished up the Varsity game

There’s something about the very last home game of the season.  Maybe it’s the mass of mini-cheerleaders or possibly even seeing our Senior Lady Cats play home court for one last symbolic time.  Some fans have seen these girls grow up with a basketball by their side and it’s pretty unbelievable to realize that we might not see some of them anymore.  Senior Night is just one of those times that we see every year and one that young athletes expect when their time finally comes.  Proud parents walk their daughters through balloon arches and an aisle formed by cheerleadersas they take photos and are awarded their basket filled with memorabilia.  This year we had five senior girls! All of whom we’ll miss on our court.  Cheri Preston, Brandee Potts, Yliana Daniel, Teresa Wayment, and Shawna Pace were all taken through the arches tonight.  Good job and good luck ladies!

Tonight JV girls slammed the Lady Diamondbacks from start to finish.  Truly a great example of Burley’s future teams.  Small but powerhouse players played their game with energy that only those girls could crank out.  The girls came in explosively with a score of 16-2 at the end of the first quarter alone.  Their fire kept burning on throughout the game and they left the court at the half with a score of 24-10.  For the second half the girls managed to keep ahold on Century while still scoring points.  They capped off the game with a lead of 30 points and the final score of 46 – 16.

Varsity girls came in with their starting seniors and fought for their last home game of the season.  While working on the game the Diamondbacks managed to wriggle and press their way out of our grasp with a lead on Burley of 20 points at the half (10-30).  Tonight’s game was highly physical, packed with intensity and ferocity.  Burley brought what they had but unfortunately came up short with a final score of 31 to 49.  Close… but nowhere near close enough.  Even though Varsity’s loss was taken these young ladies show bright futures ahead of them and we wish them the best in whatever they choose to do.

Ready to dive full on into Burley High School’s athletics? Well here’s some upcoming events!  Girls’ basketball District games are coming up Feb. 2-12 and those games are still TBA so we’ll have to keep you posted!  Burley Boys still have a few games until they finish up, all are away but there is one last home game! Take a guess? It’s the big one! Burley vs.  Minico @ Burley on Feb. 10th w/ games beginning at 4:30! Make sure you’re there!  Can’t wait quite that long?  Well neither can we so come and support our Burley Wrestling teams!  JV is having the Burley JV Invite to be held at Burley this Friday and Saturday beginning at 3:30.  While the Varsity boys head for the Red Halverson Invite @ Minico also this Friday and Saturday and also starting at 3:30.  These guys are worth it and need all the Burley fans we can dig up!  Support your Cats!

The Classic Rivals: Burley and Minico, The Girls Duke It Out!

The Classic Rivals: Burley and Minico, The Girls Duke It Out!

If you come from a long line of bobcats you can see that this rivalry from across the river as been going on since our grandparents were at the old high school.  The Burley/Minico games are the highlights of the year.  Everyone knows about them and everyone goes to scream and cheer for their team.  All of the girls fought ’til the end tonight.  Exciting and stomach wrenching games from the Freshman to the Varsity.  People’s stomachs dropped when a shot was missed and jumped to their feet when the ball sunk into the net.  There are few games that come every once in a while when everyone leaves, win or lose, they still smile and say, ‘That was a really great game!’  And since these games come so few and far between it’s a great moment that you can say, ‘Hey! We were there!’

The freshmen beat down the Spartans in the end with a slim win but a victory none the less.  Powerhouse Junior Varsity stole the spotlight with a game full of come-backs and fast-break plays.  Sophomore starter for JV, Delta Jones, commented on the game with a grin, “We had to play hard to execute our offense out there.  We played well and showed a lot of heart out there tonight!”  Her statement wasn’t far off the mark of the game either.  They showed enough heart and enough skill and took the second win of the night with a final score of 37 to 32.

Varsity showed up and put their Bobcat ferocity to the test.  The girls battled back and forth, raising the intensity of the game from the start.  With a score of Minico up with a slim lead at the half, 20 to 19, Burley brought it on in the second half.  Coach Marshall Lagge, coach to JV girls and asst. coach to the Varsity girls, commented on the Varsity game, “They hit some shots and our girls played a good team. Our girls gave them all they could handle.  It was a fun game to watch and people definately got their money’s worth tonight.”  But even with a great game, someone has to lose and tonight our Varsity girls played their hardest and came up short, but just barely.  Minico brought it all home with a final score of 32 to 38.

A close game, a real nail-biter, and it’s just one of those times when the game ends and people beg for more.  And if you’re a die-hard Burley fan, then come and support our Bobcats and LadyCats in their up-coming games.  Burley Boys play Canyon Ridge for a homegame this Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at 6 o’Clock.  And our LadyCats play next Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, against Wood River at 6 o’Clock.  Don’t miss these last few games as our legendary Burley Cats basketball comes to a close for this year.

Burley Boys Slaughter Wood River

Tonight we got a taste of what our Burley basketball could and should be like.  It was a hands-down blindfolded win.  Now, not to sound too proud or arrogant, but our boys should be proud of all of our teams’ victories tonight, even if the win was against Wood River.  But they should also take this victory with a grain of salt and compare the completely different level that Pocatello and Wood River are on.  Although, I’m not implying that our boys are overly cocky and they certainly understood what they succeded in doing tonight, even if it is a small victory.

Freshmen came out energized with their eyes on the prize.  With a score of 37 to 10 at the half, it’s hard not to be overly confident coming into the second half.  They pulled the whole ordeal off with a final score of 71 to 18, putting the Wolverines back in their place.  Not too bad for coming into the high school league with only 3 previous games under their belts.

Junior Varsity boys started out with a kick and certainly didn’t stop there.  With almost a thirty point lead at the half, they were confident in tonight’s energy.  These boys certainly know how to work with each other.  They brought in the final score of 65 to 18, a definite increase from their latest game.  Kody Coltrin, a freshman on Junior Varsity, commented on the game, “We played well, but we could have played better.”  And with this comment I’m sure we’re all looking forward to what this season and future seasons, will hold for these talented boys.

Varsity brought on their game faces tonight.  With ferocity they took on Wood River’s varsity and hauled in the greatest lead of all, with 33 to 5 at their half.  Many people saw the end was near and left for home early when they saw the lead these guys were taking in.  Burley played well under Coach Bagley and topped it off with 60 to 13, they all certainly have bright futures with the game.

If you missed these awesome games, and you’re up for traveling for these players, the boys have the next three games as the visitors.  Excited for the next one? Well the boys play Kuna @ Kuna this Friday, Dec. 11, 2009 beginning at 4:30 PM. Then again against Middleton @ Middleton on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 with the early start at 11 AM. And finally the last away game this side of New Year’s, on Wednesday, Dec. 16, when they play Preston @ Preston at 6 PM.  Finally they cap off the beginning of the season with a final home game to kick-off Christmas Vacation on Friday, Dec. 18, with Century @ Burley.  Come and support our boys! I know they’ll love to have ya!

Burley Boys Basketball: Poky @ Burley

Burley basketball is legendary, with the expectations of our back-to-back state wins over our boys’ heads pressure is put on the up and coming players. But with the start of the season it might take a while for our boys to get into the swing of things. This home game was a real tug-o-war with Freshmen losing 38-54, Junior Varsity coming short with 27-42, and finally with a Varsity win with 62-46.

JV players fought for their game but ultimately fell short. With the tied score of 18 to 18 at the half the crowd was hopeful that the boys would go in for the long haul and take in a win, but all went downhill from the third quarter on. Cody Hosteen, a Burley sophomore and JV player, sat it out on the bench tonight with an injury to the wrist. He commented on the game with, “It kills me to sit on the bench watching my team struggle when I know that they are ten times better than that!” Hopefully the season will get better as the boys get a foothold on what they’re up against.

Varsity was cheered on from our cheerleaders and spirited Student Section. They took on the Pocatello Indians with their bobcat war faces and managed to hold them throughout the game. With nearly a double-diget lead on the Indians during the game, spirits were running high with the hopes that we might be able to show the visitors what we were made of.  In the end Varsity boys pulled through with a victory that topped off the night.

With these exciting games just at the start of the season we’d all like to see what these talented boys are capable of.  Be watching for the up-and-coming Freshmen, the tested Junior Varsity with the new addition of a shining freshman, and our tried and true Varsity boys who managed to drive deep tonight.  To keep up with these busy boys come to their next game on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, @ 6pm when they battle against Woodriver.  Make sure you come and support our Burley boys!

BHS Football vs. Preston (Homecoming)

Let me start out by saying that the game was great to watch, and I was so caught up in the moment that I might have missed a few details. Both teams played hard. It was a very physical game. If you wern’t there, then you missed out on the most exciting thing that happened this side of the Snake River on Friday night.

Preston kicked off, and in a very non-conventional move, went for a trick onside sick. It looked like they were successful in getting the ball back, but with a pile 10 players high, the crowd just had to sit and watch with anticipation. The referee called out Burley ball, the fans went wild  as the bobcats settled down for an offensive drive.

The first half was back and forth with fumbles and interceptions on both sides. Burley and Preston really struggled to move the ball with strong defenses stopping the passing game. But, Preston got close enough to try for a long field goal, and the ball hit the post. From the Burley bleachers, it looked like it bounced wide, but when the referees hands pointed up in the air, you could hear the groans from the Burley student section. The rest of the first half was dominated by Burley around the red zone. Preston intercepted one pass in the end-zone. On another drive, Burley caught a pass in the end-zone that was called out of bounds, followed by a field goal attempt that fell short.

Half time was filled with great entertainment with the Cheerleaders rendition of “Triller” and the Steperettes hip-hop routine. The Burley Bobcat Marching Band performed their entire show which featured music from “Jr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and then the homecoming queen (Payton Condie) was announced.

To start the 2nd half, Burley kicked a low ball very hard at the front line of Preston, and it bounced off one of their players and Burley recovered the ball. At one point in the second half Preston received 3 personal fouls, and Burley was on the 7 yard line with 1st and goal. But, Preston’s defense pulled a number on the bobcats, and they were unable to score. With just over a minute left, Preston was 4th and around 7 to go, and got the first down. They then ran in for a touchdown making the score 10-0. Burley was unable to push down the field with the time left, and lost with the final score 10-0.

Both teams played great. Hats off to the defense for this low scoring game that saw more turnovers than touchdowns. Though Burley lost, they proved that they can keep up with tough teams, and I am looking forward to see if they can kept the defense looking strong and step it up on offense.

Game was over when: Preston got first down on 4th with just over a minute.

Best play of the game: On 4th and forever…Burley went for a fake punt, and Mills hit Alex Greener for a Bobcat first down. Having a quarterback for a punter has its advantages.

Soccer Game of the Century

The Burley boy’s varsity soccer team’s hope for a trip to the state tournament was dashed tonight in a heartbreaking loss to Wood River.  The Bobcats were down 2-0 at half time, and came roaring back with a goal from Alex Magana and another by Kartch Hinckley.  The regulation game ended in a tie 2-2.

BHS Juniors Change Powderpuff History

BHS Juniors Change Powderpuff History

Powderpuff is a diverse way to play football. It usually consists of playoffs between the Juniors vs. Freshmen and Seniors vs. Sophomores with the winners from both playing the final game. Of course, we switch things up a little. The girls play the game while the boys applaud them from the sidelines as cheerleaders. Continue Reading
