Issun Boshi – BHS High School Brings Japanease Puppets To The Stage

Talk about a lot of “talent on the stage” hitting Burley over this upcoming few weeks! This show is something that is seriously larger than life. When we were backstage for Joseph and the blah blah blah Dreamcoat, we were surrounding by these puppets that were towering 20 ft. above us. They really got me interested in what Mr. Call was doing with this upcoming production and with opening night right around the corner, it’s time to get the word out to the community so that you can show your support.

Burley High School Drama Department’s Children Production of Issun Boshi (“Little One Inch”) is the Japanese tale of Tom Thumb and opens February 23rd 2010.  Directed by Richard B. Call, the production will run Feb. 23, 24, 25, 26 in the KFAC at BHS.  Curtain time is 7:00PM for all performances with additional 1:00PM matinee performances for our local elementary schools on Feb. 23rd and 24th.

Burley Boys Basketball: Poky @ Burley

Burley basketball is legendary, with the expectations of our back-to-back state wins over our boys’ heads pressure is put on the up and coming players. But with the start of the season it might take a while for our boys to get into the swing of things. This home game was a real tug-o-war with Freshmen losing 38-54, Junior Varsity coming short with 27-42, and finally with a Varsity win with 62-46.

JV players fought for their game but ultimately fell short. With the tied score of 18 to 18 at the half the crowd was hopeful that the boys would go in for the long haul and take in a win, but all went downhill from the third quarter on. Cody Hosteen, a Burley sophomore and JV player, sat it out on the bench tonight with an injury to the wrist. He commented on the game with, “It kills me to sit on the bench watching my team struggle when I know that they are ten times better than that!” Hopefully the season will get better as the boys get a foothold on what they’re up against.

Varsity was cheered on from our cheerleaders and spirited Student Section. They took on the Pocatello Indians with their bobcat war faces and managed to hold them throughout the game. With nearly a double-diget lead on the Indians during the game, spirits were running high with the hopes that we might be able to show the visitors what we were made of.  In the end Varsity boys pulled through with a victory that topped off the night.

With these exciting games just at the start of the season we’d all like to see what these talented boys are capable of.  Be watching for the up-and-coming Freshmen, the tested Junior Varsity with the new addition of a shining freshman, and our tried and true Varsity boys who managed to drive deep tonight.  To keep up with these busy boys come to their next game on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, @ 6pm when they battle against Woodriver.  Make sure you come and support our Burley boys!

Class of 2010 Mr. BHS Competition

Once a year a competition comes around that might not be widely advertised, but still draws a rather large crowd. That competition is Mr. BHS. Students from the Burley High School vote on the Seniors who they think should be in the competition each year, and then the boys do their best to put on a “beauty pageant” like production.

The contestants this year were Dallas Allred, Christian Barraza, Robert Caldera, Bryson Cole, Sam Handy, Bo Hawker, Jaram Jones, Brent Lee, Christian Loya, Bret Ramirez, Alfonso Sanchez, and Christian Winmill.

Formal Wear

To start off, Mary Frances Adams and Art Silva introduced the boys one by one as they were escorted down the isles by their girl of choice. They were dressed in everything from tuxedos to pink converse all-stars while the MC’s read answers to questions the boys were asked like, “What is your favorite  ‘yo mamma’ joke?”

Talent Competition

Next, the audience was entertained with a wide variety of talents such as a hill billy fiddler, guitar rock band group, and even a Napolian Dynamite dancer. Laughter and applause accompanied the acts, and dry MC jokes filled the downtime.

Sports Wear Modeling

The boys then partnered with Special Olympians in showcasing a sport of choice. There were hunters with nerf guns, ice fishing, swimmers with a kiddie pool, and even ping pong (with balls being hit into the audience).

Impromptu Questions

The last event is a series of random questions asked to the participants. There were questions about “what teacher they would be”, or “who their favorite person was”.  Brent Lee, the hill billy fiddler, was asked to describe his experience at Burley High School in one sentence.  He said, “Burley High School is a great school where you can chill with your friends, and learn stuff sometimes…but mainly chill with your friends.” He was told it was a run on sentence.

Auction

After the events, the boys are auctioned off by Keith Couch. They are sold for 3 hours of hard labor (though I hear many talk their way out of it) for prices from $125 to $500.

Awards

The BPA announced the winners of the 2009 Mr. BHS as followed….

  • Mr. Personality–Christian Barraza
  • Best Sport–Dallas Allred
  • Best Talent–Brent Lee
  • 2nd Runner Up–Dallas Allred
  • 1st Runner UP–Christian Winmill
  • Mr. BHS–Brent Lee

Happy Ending

It was a great evening at the King Fine Arts Center and the boys, along with everyone else involved, put on another great show. This event is done each year to help fund the Burley Special Olympics program. There are currently 50 athletes from Cassia County, and over 110 volunteers who contribute their time and talents to the local program. 80% of the volunteers are Burley High School Students. I recommend that if you haven’t been to a Mr. BHS competition, then don’t miss the opportunity to come next year, and help fund a great program that has blessed the lives of many individuals and families in our area.

Dracula: My Favorite Part of Halloween Night

After seeing hoards of children roam my street I found it necessary to turn off our halloween lights, lock up the house, and get out for something fun.  I decided to go to the 9 p.m. opening night showing of Dracula at the King Fine Arts Center. The play is being put on by the Burley High School Bobcat Theatre under the direction of Richard Call. Read the full story

Two Big Wins For Burley Soccer

The Burley High School varsity soccer team won in the district tournament today at Wood River.  The score was 3- 0.  Despite cold temperatures, enthusiasm was high. Saul Esquivel scored in the first half for Burley.  In the second half Logan Searle scored on a kick that bounced over the goalie’s head.  Caesar Mendoza sealed the game with a spectacular bicycle kick goal. Wood River was held scoreless in a very physical match.  They were awarded an indirect kick inside the 18. Burley’s defense was tough, and deflected the kick.  Burley is now 2 and 0 in district playoff.  They meet top seed Jerome at Jerome on Monday.

Bobcats Celebrate

The Burley girls soccer team also won their district game today at home against Canyon Ridge.  The Bobcats goal came from Aubrey Vale, and was enough to give Burley the 1-0 win.  The girls will meet Minico Monday at Minico for their next district tournament game.

Daily Advisory Block Makes Students Better People

BHS Highschool

Dr. Carolyn Hondo

For the past few years, Burley High School has been involved in implementing an advisory period in which every student has a thirty-minute block of time with the same teacher every day. The purpose of the advisory period is to help students interact positively with a small group of peers as well as an adult in the school. While not perfect, it is our goal to build strong connections with school that will help each student complete high school, graduate on time, and be prepared to enter the adult world with many of the necessary skills that contribute to success in our society. BHS Communicator October 2008

This letter was sent to all Burley High School parents by the principal Dr. Carloyn Hondo.  We would like to thank her for sharing this valuable information with all of our readers at GoBurley.com.

H1N1 (Swine) Flu Plan

Each year colds and flu affect people in our community. BHS is committed to helping our students and staff members attend school regularly. We encourage parents to pay attention to these flu symptoms:

  • Fever of 100 degrees
  • Coughing
  • Sore throat and/or body aches
  • Possibly vomiting and/or diarrhea

We encourage you to keep your student at home if these symptoms occur. It is more beneficial to stay home if you are running a fever than to come to school and pass the flu to others. Encourage healthy habits – wash hands often, cover mouth with arm when sneezing or coughing, and keep others informed if you are not feeling well.

If you have questions or concerns about H1N1, go to www.flu.gov or call 1-800-CDC-INFO.

At school we will make sure infection control procedures are in place (hand sanitizers in all classrooms, disinfectant solutions/wipes for all desks or equipment, training for students in hand washing and coughing into their arms).  Please make sure we have emergency contact numbers so that we can reach someone should your student become ill at school.

Each school has thermometers with which to check temperatures. Any student absent for three or more days will have his/her temperature taken when he/she returns. Students must be fever free without the use of fever reducing medications for 24 hours prior to returning to school.

RELATED ISSUES

We want to work with you in the event of a Swine Flu outbreak. Should your student miss several days, please do not hesitate to contact the school so that assignments can be given. You can also use PowerSchool to access the assignments your student needs to complete by clicking first on the student’s grade in the class, and then on the assignment (will be in blue). You should find a detailed description of the assignment. If you have no internet access or difficulties, please contact us. We will be glad to help.

When They Are Not Really Sick…

We sometimes get every excuse in the book for why students should be allowed to stay home. Here is a list of some common excuses teens use to get out of going to school – and ways to combat them:

  • “I don’t feel good.” Unless s/he can describe the symptoms exactly, send him/her to school.
  • “If I could just sleep longer.” Respond that skipping TV tonight could mean going to bed an hour or so earlier.
  • “I have a project due that I haven’t started.” Let your student know that s/he needs to be more organized. S/he shouldn’t skip one class to finish an assignment in another.
  • “I need to rest before the game.” School comes before extracurricular activities. No exception.

However, if your teen is constantly trying to stay home from school, it may be the sign of a larger problem. Speak to the school counselor or a teacher or administrator if you are worried.

See the student handbook for more information about student attendance and what is required with excessive absences and receiving high school credit.BSB
